Our Nova Scotia Adventure

“It’s all the little moments that make life a big adventure”

Thirteen years had passed since we visited Nova Scotia. Our first trip was for a friend’s wedding to the quaint town of Lunenburg. It was a short trip, but we instantly fell in love with the warm-hearted residents and the natural beauty of the places we visited. The impression of Nova Scotia never faded. So, when we decided we wanted an east coast family vacation there wasn’t a doubt of where we would go. Our trip to Nova Scotia will always be one of my most favourite family adventures.

Planning Our Trip

There were a few important decisions we made up front that helped us to plan our trip:

  • Fly into Halifax

  • Rent a car and do short road trips

  • Go back to Lunenburg

  • Go whale watching

To plan our trip, we did some research to set our expectations of how much driving would be realistic to the different regions within the province. A great resource we used was novascotia.com.

Our Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Halifax by midday and spend the rest of the day exploring the city.

Day 2: Depart Halifax after breakfast and drive to Lunenburg. Along the way stop off at Peggy’s Cove and Chester.

Day 3: Morning sight seeing in Mahone Bay and lunch in Lunenburg. Head to Digby in the afternoon and enjoy the resort and surrounding area.

Day 4: Explore Long Island & Brier Island.

Day 5: Whale watching.

Day 6: Tour the ocean bottom floor during low tide in the morning. Head to Halifax in the afternoon.

Day 7: Site seeing in Halifax.

Day 8: Depart for Toronto.

Halifax

Halifax Citadel National Historic Site.

My son loves #history and he was not disappointed with the facts he got to gobble up here! #novascotiahistory

Exploring #Halifax.

Peggy's Cove

Calling all #explorers. An absolute paradise for inquisitive minds with big imaginations.

I loved watching the discoveries the kids made.

Lunenburg

#Lunenburg is so charming. The most friendly residents, wonderful food, and plenty of natural splendor. So many great memories made and remembered here.

Digby and Bay of Fundy

A short drive and a few ferry rides later - our adventure on Long Island and Brier Island was unforgettable. We hiked and explored all day. Our most magnificent find was #balancingrock.

Sailing the ocean blue in search of whales. #whalewatching

Petit Passage Whale Watch (www.ppww.ca) did not disappoint. We saw five humpback whales, as well as dolphins and puffins. #natureinaction

Low tide in the morning #digbyns #bayoffundy

Our last day in Digby was spent in a tide pool taking a peek into the Fundy Aquarium Ecozone. We spent the morning with Greg Turner of #gaeltours in the "Plankton, Periwinkle, and Predator tour. An interactive tour that fascinated old and young alike! My daughter was officially crowned the "Periwinkle Whisperer".

Our last evening in Digby enjoying the view of the harbour.

Food

The food scene did not disappoint. Featuring some of our favourite meals during our travels. #goodeats #novascotiafare
